CITY OF SANTA ANA <br /> SPECIFICATIONS <br /> PROJECT NO.: 25-6030 <br /> TRAFFIC SIGNAL INSTALLATION AT SEGERSTROM AVENUE AND ROSEWOOD <br /> AVENUE <br /> All striping and related roadside signage shall be in place prior to opening the lane(s) <br /> to public traffic. <br /> E. THERMOPLASTIC <br /> Thermoplastic traffic stripes, pavement markings, crosswalks and limit lines shall <br /> conform to the provisions in Sections 84-1, "General," and 84-2, "Thermoplastic <br /> Traffic Stripes and Pavement Markings," of the Caltrans Standard Specifications and <br /> these special provisions. <br /> Specifications for glass beads shall be "8010-004 (Type II)." Glass beads shall be <br /> premixed within the thermoplastic material prior to application and also applied to the <br /> surface of the molten thermoplastic striping material immediately following the <br /> application of the thermoplastic. <br /> Thermoplastic material shall conform to the requirements of Caltrans Specification No. <br /> PTH-02ALKYD, for Thermoplastic Traffic Striping Material,White and Yellow. The <br /> binder material shall be Alkyd. Copies of the Caltrans Specification No. PTH- <br /> 02ALKYD are available at the Caltrans Transportation Laboratory, Sacramento, <br /> California. Thermoplastic material shall conform to the requirements of Caltrans <br /> Specification No. PTH-02ALKYD. <br /> Thermoplastic material for traffic stripes shall be applied by extrusion method in single <br /> uniform layer at the minimum thickness of 40 mils and not to exceed 50 mils. <br /> The Contractor shall not begin work until a written notice to proceed has been issued <br /> by the Engineer. The Contractor shall notify the City of Santa Ana - Public Works <br /> Agency Engineer a minimum of two working days prior to beginning the work to <br /> coordinate the work. A schedule of the streets to be re-striped for each day shall be <br /> provided to the Engineer one full workday prior to striping or re-striping any streets. <br /> The Contractor shall adjust the thermoplastic application rate as necessary to achieve <br /> the thermoplastic application rate stated above prior to striping. Thermoplastic <br /> application rate tests(up to and including 5 thermoplastic application rate tests per day, <br /> including the thermoplastic application rate test at the start of each workday) may be <br /> conducted at random times and locations throughout each workday at the discretion of <br /> the Engineer. <br /> Thermoplastic Application Rate Testing <br /> The paint application rate shall be determined by passing the striper over a metal <br /> plate while the paint application system is operating. The flow of glass beads shall <br /> be stopped while passing over the metal plate. The Engineer shall measure <br /> thickness of the applied thermoplastic immediately after application of <br /> thermoplastic on the metal plate. Striping shall not continue if the proper thickness <br /> of thermoplastic is not being applied. Adjustments and corrective measures shall <br /> be applied to insure that the correct thickness of thermoplastic will be applied. <br /> 44 <br />
