Additionally, through our extensive experience with low- <br /> <br />income, at-risk youth, we have also developed workshop delivery methods that are <br /> <br />highly effective with our target market For example, CHCADA's counselors will follow <br /> <br />guidelines such as those In Figure 13 below In delivering the group <br /> <br />counseling/workshop sessions. <br /> <br />Fil!ure 13: Leading Group Counseling Sessions with At-Risk Youth <br />Utilize exercises to allow the youth to feel comfortable in thc group; <br />Introduce an overall hamework for the topic before opcning the floor to discussion; <br />Ask questions during the conceptual overview as part of the cngagement process; <br />Utilize vivid imagery and hard data in order to force the youth to consider the costs of <br />dysfunctional bchavior and the importance of labor market participation; <br />Do not prcach, or pass judgment, etc.; <br />Apply directive counscling; <br />Listen to the youth; <br />Move the discussion along a logical progression in small sequences so that by the end of the <br />counseling sessions, the workshop's objectives can be achieved; and <br />Others. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />The above guidelines are illustrative and not exhaustive. <br />The contents of the group sessions will, as mentioned, cover a broad range of <br />topics. Each subsection below includes the proposed syllabus for each of the proposed <br />workshops. <br /> <br />Core Course #1: The Fuerzas Un/lias Pro!!ram: All Overview <br /> <br />1. COURSE DESCRIPTION <br />This introductory workshop will serve as an orientation for the youth to the WIA <br />program. It will define the purpose of the program, goals and objectives, strategies, intake <br />processes, and thc program components. <br /> <br />11. Course Objectives <br />After completing this session, each participant will be able to: <br />,f List four or more benefits that will accrue to themselves and their families from the <br />receipt of services through Fuerzos Un/dos; <br />,f Review printcd materials on Fuerzas Unidos and summarize all services that they and <br />their parcnts will rcccive; <br />,f Identify anticipated barriers to their full participation; <br />,f Articulate lactors that led to their joblessness; <br />,f Outline their fears and apprehensions regarding their future; <br />,f Complete all input and additional assessmcnts for their participation; and <br />,f Provide a sell~assessment of the support(s) needed. <br /> <br />Ill. Course Orientation <br />This first workshop will be highly intcractive.
