FOOTHILL COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL: Ciaremont, CaliforniaThi;
project consists of three single story buildings, adding a 5,000 sq
ft. Pre -School to the existing K thru 8 Foothill Country Day Schoo
campus of 200 students. The buildings include classrooms,
home -style kitchen, and bathrooms. Further designing the project
primarily for the children, FCDS opted to have the window size:
and heights at the children's scale, as is the casework inside the
buildings. We think that this further reduces the scale of the
buildings in keeping with the children fostered there. The
wonderful deep red color of the existing building was kept anc
used for the new buildings, but we felt that if used on all surfaces,
it would visually overwhelm. Inverting the figure -ground colorE
(red walls with white trim vs. white walls with red trim) adds a measure of pre-school whimsy reminiscent of
child's crayon colored drawing. This color juxtaposition invites the viewer's eye around the project and tease-,
the mind to explore the unpredictable. Gillis & Associates Architects,
Inc. was asked to provide architectural services to assist the District in
evaluating a purchase of an existing built project or buying a new site
and constructing new facilities. Gillis & Associates worked with the
District to evaluate their needs and came to the conclusion that the
existing property was far and away the more valuable option. Once
the option was selected, Gillis & Associates was asked to provide
modifications to the existing buildings to more specifically
accommodate The District needs and to modify the aesthetics of the
Administrative Buildings and its surroundings. The project bid under the Architect's estimate and finished with a
change order percentage of less than four percent (4%).
