90.A. PUBLIC COMMENTS <br />Dr. John Bennett, representing the Santa Ana Unified School District <br />expressed concern about the temporary traffic barriers in French Park <br />Maria Gutierrez Garcia, Principal of Davis School, expressed concerns <br />about the safety of the school children at Davis and distributed copies of a <br />petition from parents of students at the school <br />Sally Ramirez, representing SEW Local 347 addressed Council relative to <br />contract negotiations with the City's part-time employees and the need for <br />benefits for these employees <br />90.B. CITY COUNCIL COMMENTS <br />Councilmember Alvarez <br />• Encouraged adults and children to walk to school together to raise <br />awareness about the importance of safe walking behavior on October <br />2, 2002 <br />• Noted that Santa Ana has a large population and that all <br />neighborhoods have traffic issues. She further noted that the petition <br />process is complex and confusing and she encouraged the Public <br />Works Agency to look at other ways to implement neighborhood traffic <br />plans <br />• Reported that the City Council approved an agreement for the <br />cataloging, processing, and purchasing of youth Spanish language <br />books and materials, and encouraged residents to check out the <br />Library collection; she further stressed the importance of being bi- <br />lingual <br />• Announced that pursuant to the One City One Book program, the <br />Mayor has selected Steinbeck's "The Pearl" as the recommended <br />choice for Santa Ana residents to read; she further noted that this book <br />is in Spanish <br />• Encouraged Council members to continue a dialog with Part-time <br />employees in order to reach an acceptable agreement <br />• Asked the Council to adjourn in memory of Mike Silvas, who was a <br />former Police Officer and former investigator with the District Attorney's <br />Office <br />Councilmember Christy <br />• Asked Fire Chief Martin and Police Chief Walters to work on a safety <br />fair to address the safety of children, pedestrian and home safety as <br />well as CPR training and education on the Amber Alert, Megan's Law, <br />etc; she suggested that this event be held within the next 45-60 days. <br />• Asked the Council to adjourn in the memory of Samantha Runnion <br />CITY COUNCIL MINUTES 292 AUGUST 5, 2002 <br />---- -- __ <br />
