PROCESS FOR NEIGHBORHOOD TRAFFIC PLANNING AND <br />TRAFFIC SIGNAL PRIORITIZATION presented by George Alvarez, City <br />Engineer <br />Highlights of this presentation are as follows: <br />• Before the City decides where traffic signals are installed: <br />traffic counts are conducted for pedestrians and vehicles <br />accident data is reviewed to determine if the problem <br />can be corrected <br />signal warrant studies are conducted <br />• The following factors are included in calculating warrants for a <br />traffic signal: <br />- Approach speed of major street <br />- Minimum vehicle volume for 8 highest hours <br />- Traffic accidents within one year susceptible to <br />correction <br />- Minimum pedestrian volume <br />• If an intersection meets warrants, then it is prioritized for funding <br />• Priority points are calculated based on: peak hour traffic volume; <br />three year accident history; peak hour pedestrian traffic count; <br />proximity to schools <br />CITY COUNCIL MINUTES 345 SEPTEMBER 16, 2002 <br />
