We meet in a historical
boxing club in a historic, extremely low income area of Santa Ana. The boxing program is open from 4-8 PM each
evening, Monday through Friday. During this boxing time, tutoring is also available.
Before the gym opens for boxing, club members can come in for intensive tutoring from 3-4 pm. On Saturdays,
teens participate in competitive boxing tournaments, community service events or field trips.
The Santa Ana Boxing Club provides professional boxing instruction, a workout routine, personal counseling, with
character development and leadership development activities, as well as on-site paid tutors to assist with
homework or provide additional academic tutoring. In a culture of gangs, drugs and violence, teens need a safe
place to go when school gets out, a place where they do not have to look over their shoulder.
Teens also need a place where they can enjoy friendships while being in a supervised environment. Today, there
is much talk about adolescent obesity and the boxing club provides healthy exercise and physical activity with a
purpose. Students also learn the art of the sport of boxing, instead of just slugging it out.
Teens get to use their natural energy in a constructive manner, developing excellent sport skills that create self-
confidence and discipline.
Students learn that education is important as we stress academic achievement as well. Some children in the
inner-city never get out of the area.
Teens learn that having fun times like going to the Big Bear Mountains, or theme parks like Magic Mountain or
visiting Museums are also part of a healthy life style.
Teens also learn to give back to the community through our community service projects. Recently, with a city
block grant, the teens painted over graffiti in the neighborhood making our community a better place.
Schedule of Performace
Estimate the number of ONLY unduplicated
Santa Ana residents to be served by the funded program during the 12 -
month contract period per quarter.
