About the Organization <br />Description of Proposer <br />Il. About Your Organization <br />A. Description of the Proposer <br />Taller San Jose (St. Joseph's Workshop) is a non-profit, faith -based organization whose sole <br />purpose is to work with undereducated and unskilled young adults. Since 1995, TSJ has worked <br />with more than 3,500 young adults in Santa Ana and the surrounding communities. TSJ is a <br />multi -service program providing: a high school diploma program, mentoring and counseling <br />services, life skills, job -preparation, job -placement <br />s uctron, office careegs andpasses and medical areerdcare <br />support as well as vocational programs in con <br />The typical TSJ student shares seven of the following characteristics: <br />• Is Latino <br />• Is between the ages of 18-28 <br />• Has not completed high school <br />• Is a parent <br />• Speaks both English and Spanish <br />• Lives in over -crowded housing <br />• Is unemployed or underemployed <br />• Has been incarcerated or has been involved in gangs, drugs, or crime <br />ram <br />TSJ developed seven core goals for out-of-school <br />VJithin the periodrogone year, students are asked <br />nents work <br />toward helping students to achieve these ends. <br />to complete five of the following objectives: <br />• Obtain a GED or complete a diploma program <br />• Master basic computers skills <br />• Attain a driver's license <br />• Open a bank account and use it <br />• Stay crime free for a minimum of one year <br />• Register to vote <br />• Get a job that pays above minimum wage <br />TSJ serves as a structured and supportive environment in the center of the city for young people <br />who are caught in the cycle of poverty and need further training to become financially <br />independent. Youth are empowered to become self-reliant, productive adults within one year of <br />their enrollment. <br />Over the last thirteen years, Taller San Jose has been recognized for its work with the hardest to <br />serve youth and young adults. The program was awarded the Audrey Nelson Award as one of <br />six programs in the country noted for creative use of Community Development Funding. <br />Likewise, the Pew Charitable Trust named TSJ as one of 19 programs in the country that it has <br />chosen to research and study. This research project, Wanted: Solutions for America, has <br />identified programs which creatively address society's most critical issues. Most recently, Sister <br />9 <br />
