UYA'Irrnmv,,AU
POINT OF CONTACT:
Daniel Diaz
Co-Founder of The Santanerc
ddiaz@santancro.org
(714)-543-6974 (text first!)
July 1, 2025 (finalized draft at 12:00 PM PT)
TRANSCRIPT OF PUBLIC COMMENT
Hello all, I'll try to keep it brief. If you don't know who I am, I'm Daniel Diaz, born and
raised in Santa Ana and a product of Santa Ana Unified. I am, essentially, The Santanero. A
man who wears all the hats in this growing world called community news. I have elected to say
my piece in the flesh rather than publish an editorial that would go nowhere, so forgive me if
I'm a bit edgy.
It's been 23 days since raids began en masse here in Santa Ana, and 22 days since first sending
my questions to Santa Ana P iblic Information Officer Paul Eakins and Santa Ana Police PIO
Natalie Garcia. Over the course of seven days, I emailed them 87 questions, and an additional
five to Garcia and City Attorney Sonia Carvalho the morning Narciso Barranco was detained.
Eight were answered by means of press release, social media post, PRA response, or during
the last City Council meeting. The other 84 remained unanswered.
These questions I ask aren't to be nosy, I asked them because I believe the community has the
right to know the answers given the high level of fear, anxiety, and uncertainty plaguing our
community.
According to Transparent California, Eakins got paid $167,297.16 in 2023 including benefits
and Garcia received $167,966.48 in 2023 with benefits. I've always sucked at doing math but
according to my calculations... Eakins received a little over $458 a day, while Garcia received
$460 and some change per day. Those numbers may be up more due to inflations and such. To
some, it sounds like a good job being paid all that taxpayer money for no answers. In all the
budget reports I've reviewed dating back to 1989, in all the campaigns I've seen growing up,
in most of the comments given by the electeds, it has always been the city's goal to be more
transparent... but in times the city is gripped with fear, people refusing to step into the sunlight
and shelter themselves in a blanket of grief, who do the people turn to?
