temporary active duties . <br /> 11 . 4 Jury and Witness Leave . When an on-duty employee is <br /> called to serve as a juror or a non-party witness in any <br /> court action, he or she shall be allowed leave for the <br /> time actually required for such service, without loss of <br /> pay. Each on-duty employee called for such service shall <br /> present to the Police Chief for examination the subpoena <br /> calling him or her to such service and shall pay into the <br /> City Treasury the fees collected for such service, with <br /> the exception of reimbursement for transportation <br /> expenses, if any. <br /> 11 . 5 Examination Leave . Employees participating in <br /> examinations conducted during their normal working hours <br /> for positions in the competitive service of the City of <br /> Santa Ana will be granted leave with pay for the time <br /> actually required, without loss of any accrued vacation <br /> or compensatory time off benefits . <br /> 11 . 6 Unauthorized Absence . Unauthorized absence from duty for <br /> any duration of time may be considered cause for <br /> dismissal . Absence from duty without leave for five (5) <br /> consecutive working days shall be deemed a resignation <br /> from the service; provided, however, if upon return to <br /> duty the person so absenting himself makes an explanation <br /> satisfactory to the Police Chief of the cause of his <br /> absence, the Police Chief may restore him to his <br /> position, with the City Manager' s approval . <br /> 11 . 7 Authorized Absence Without Pay. Absence without pay not <br /> to exceed five (5) consecutive working days, may be <br /> authorized by the Police Chief . Absence without pay not <br /> to exceed fifteen (15) calendar days may be authorized by <br /> the department with the approval of the City Manager. <br /> Such absences may be authorized only if in the judgment <br /> of the Police Chief they serve the best interest of the <br /> City. <br /> 11 . 8 Authorized Absence Without Pay - Long Term. Upon receipt <br /> of a written request from an employee having permanent <br /> status plus action by the Police Chief recommending <br /> approval of the request, the City Manager may grant a <br /> leave of absence for up to six (6) months . <br /> An employee returning to duty with the City shall inform <br /> the Police Chief and chief personnel officer of his or <br /> her intention at least thirty (30) calendar days prior to <br /> the expiration of the six (6) months period or shorter <br /> period if the full six (6) months is not taken. Upon <br /> receipt of such notice, the Police Chief will take steps <br /> necessary to restore the employee to his or her former <br /> 41 <br />
