Restoration of the eave-line molding on <br />the south elevation will match the historic design and materials and will generally <br />follow the historical alignment of the original feature. Th e unpermitted windows will <br />be replaced for consistency with compatible window designs. <br /> <br />7. Chemical or physical treatments, if appropriate, will be undertaken using the <br />gentlest means possible. Treatments that cause damage to historic materials will <br />not be used. <br /> <br />The project will not involve chemical or physical treatments on the building and <br />therefore the project will be in full compliance with Standard 7. <br /> <br />8. Archeological resources will be protected and preserved in place. If such resources <br />must be disturbed, mitigation measures will be undertaken. <br /> <br />Standard 8 does not apply, as there are no known archeological resources on-site, <br />and the work will not require grading or excavation that may uncover any <br />archaeological resources. <br /> <br />9. New additions, exterior alterations, or related new construction will not destroy <br />historic materials, features, and spatial relationships that characterize the property. <br />The new work shall be differentiated from the old and will be compatible with the <br />historic materials, features, size, scale and proportion, and massing to protect the <br />integrity of the property and its environment. <br /> <br />As conditioned, the project complies with Standard No. 9. As discussed above, <br />while the project would alter the existing roof f orm, the work is proposed to make <br />as few alterations to the historic fabric, such as stucco wall cladding, original wood <br />and lead windows, bay window, gable vents, chimneys, and high-pitched roof. The <br />main east façade would remain unchanged. <br /> <br />Further, the second-story addition will be differentiated from the original building <br />with installation of a simple decorative molding consistent with existing molding at <br />the location of the original roofline as an homage to the original roofline and to <br />break up the extensive wall planes on the north, south, and west elevations. <br />Additionally, consistent with National Park Service Guidance (Weeks and Grimmer <br />2017), the addition will be erected on a less-visible elevation facing the backyard. <br />Although the addition will be visible from oblique views at certain vantage points <br />on the sidewalk, the high roofline of the east facade and the well-developed tree <br />canopy in the immediate vicinity would provide an effective visual obstruction from <br />most locations, including the street. That the addition is generally obscured from <br />public view lessens the proposed addition’s visual impact on the historical integrity <br />of the building. <br /> <br /> <br />Historic Resources Commission 232 9/23/2025 <br />
