S.A. 12‐022
Supervising Investigator: R. Seman Date of Report: 09/10/2012

On September 10, 2012, at 00:04 AM, the Santa Ana Police Department received a call
of a suspicious vehicle occupied by a male Hispanic parked to the rear of 3005 S. Bristol, Santa
Ana. The male Hispanic, who was later identified as MARCELINO VALENCIA ALMANZA, was
driving a silver Jeep Wrangler and was talking or engaged in a disagreement with a subject in a
wheelchair. Officer David Enriquez was dispatched to the call and arrived at 00:15 AM.
According to two civilian witnesses who reside across the street from the location,
Officer Enriquez pulled his marked patrol vehicle south of the silver Jeep Wrangler. Almanza
had his back turned towards the officer as he was having a conversation or possibly smoking a
controlled substance with who was in the wheelchair. Enriquez exited his
patrol vehicle and began to yell commands at Almanza, but all the commands were ignored.
Almanza then turned and began to rifle through items in the backseat of the Jeep. He
grabbed an item and wrapped a rag or a piece of cloth around it and continued to stand with
his back to the officer and ignored his commands. Almanza then proceeded to run towards the
drivers side front corner of the vehicle. He then crouched and positioned himself in a two‐
handed shooting stance and pointed the item wrapped in a rag at Enriquez.
Enriquez fired his weapon four times at Almanza. Almanza fell to the ground in a prone
position, still pointing the item at Enriquez underneath the vehicle. Enriquez approached
Almanza from the passenger side of the Jeep and fired two additional rounds, striking Almanza.
Almanza was handcuffed and provided emergency medical treatment. Orange County Fire
Authority responded and continued emergency medical treatment and transported him to
University of California, Irvine Medical Center. A medical examination of Almanza revealed two
bullet wounds to his right shoulder and arm.
