Because of missing data, prisoners released in Ohio <br />and Virginia were excluded from the calculation of percentage returned [o prison <br />with a new sentence. <br />Chi/d molesters and statutory rapists <br />Of the 4,295 released child molesters, <br />1 ,693 (39.4%) were rearrested during <br />the 3-year followup period (table 1 O). <br />The majority of those charged (approxi- <br />mately 982 of the 1 ,693, or 58%) were <br />charged in the first 12 months. While <br />49.9% of released statutory rapists <br />were rearrested within 3 years, nearly <br />three-fifths of those rearrests occurred <br />within the first year following release <br />(29.8% / 49.9% = 60%). <br />Recidivism of Sex Offenders Released from Prison in >994 17 <br />50A-66
