224 <br /> <br />a clear space of two (2) feet adjacent to the trench shsll be <br />left on tbs side on which the City Engineer's stakes are placed. <br /> <br /> (d) VALVE B0~wPS AND 0T~ER STRT~TURFS. The excavation <br />for all wlve boxes ~nd ot~er structures shall be sufficient to <br />leave at least six (8) inches in the clear between their outer <br />surface and the embankment or timbering which m~y be used to <br />protect them. In no case shall ~ny excavated embankment be <br />used as an exteriro form for concrete work. <br />SECTION 4. PIP~ LAYING. <br /> <br /> After the trench for water mains, and house service <br />connections has been brought to the proper line and grace in <br />the manner above specified, the pipe, shall be laid therein <br />in the following manner. <br /> <br /> (a) MAINS. Before any pipe is put into place the <br />trench bottom shall be prepmred so that each pipe shall have <br />a firm and uniform bearing for its entire length. All adjust- <br />ment to llne and grade must be made by scraping ~w~y or fi]]iug <br />in the earth under the body of the pipe, and not be wedging or <br />blocklnm up tbs hub. <br /> <br /> The fac~s of a]~ spigot ends and of ~11 shoulders in <br />the hubs or sockets must be true ~nd brought into fair contact, <br />~nd all lumps and excrescebces on said faces shall be cut away <br />before the pipe is lowered into the trench. <br /> <br /> All oipe must be thoroughly cleaned inside before <br />laying and when ever work ceases for any course the unfimished <br />end must be securely closed with a tight fitting plug. <br /> <br /> C~re must be used in fitting tbs spigot ends into the <br />bells and curves, each length of pipe must be lald so that the <br />variation iu the line at the joints will be equal. <br /> <br /> All Joi~ts sh~ll be thoroughly calked with an ~oproved <br />brand of hemp ~nd lead, usin~ not less than the following weights <br />of each material per Joint for the various sizes of pipe. <br /> <br /> Diameter of Wipe Pounds of lead Pounds of Hemp <br /> 4 inches V.~0 .21 <br /> <br /> 6 " 10.25 .31 <br /> 8 " 13.25 .44 <br /> 10 " 16.00 .53 <br /> 12 ~ 19.00 .61 <br /> <br /> The use of tapered calking tools ~ith not be per- <br /> <br />mit ted. <br /> <br /> Not more than one short or cut lengt~ of pipe will <br /> <br />be permitted between fittings. <br /> <br /> (b) FIRE HYDRANTS GATE VA!VES AND FITTINGS ON MAINS. <br />The laying of the.pipe and the calking of all Joints necessary <br />in the installation of fire hydrants, ~te v,]ves or any fittin2 <br />sb~ll comply with the above specifications, i~ addition thereto <br />all fire ~ydrants gate valves and fittings shall be blocked <br /> <br /> <br />
