-- , dramatic migration from traditional methods to Internet -centered activity as those of job search
and career management.
State and Federal Employment Services and One -Stops throughout the country are aware of the
importance of using the Internet to support job searches, career guidance and career advancement
services. The availability of America's Career Kit, America's Job Bank, and state employment
websites such as California's CaiJobs, are good examples of that awareness. However, most
workforce development agencies provide limited Internet training to staff and customers, and
therefore only scratch the surface of the Internet's full potential to help customers find a job,
retain employment, and advance their career.
This innovative, thorough, and successful series of classes introduces customers to the vast
variety of Internet employment resources. In each module, students are introduced to many
useful Web sites with free resources to help with the many tasks associated with the employment
process. In our experience, even Internet -savvy individuals are amazed at the scope and quality
of online resources available, if one knows where to find them and how to use them.
All classes are taught by HRMS Certified instructors using PowerPoint slides with live
hyperlinks to referenced Internet sites. The instructor uses video projection to show the
computer slides and demonstrate computer and Internet skills. Students watch the instructor
perform Internet functions on the screen, and then are able to practice and use the skills
themselves at their own workstation. Examples of skills taught include finding large numbers of
appropriate job listings on several major job sites, and posting a resume to a major job board. As
the students progress through the workshops, they accumulate Web addresses of helpful sites.
These are stored in their personal Favorites folder, and at the conclusion of the class, these
Favorites are uploaded to a free storage location at yahoo.com, The participants can then access
those favorite Web sites anytime they go on the Internet, and at any location: their home, the
resource center, or a library. Students also receive a courseware workbook with all referenced
Web addresses. All the recommended services the curriculum presents to participants are free,
Under WIA, this project serves Dislocated Workers as a "Special Project" under the category
"other innovative services" that improve the workforce system. Those services are: 1) Providing
Internet -based Job Search Assistance workshops to clients, and 2) Equipping staff to provide job
search assistance, work readiness skills, access to computer -based technologies, and literacy
activities related to basic workforce readiness (using a search engine, for example). These
services will assist the Santa Ana WIOlR/K Center in exceeding its WIA performance standards,
The program does not provide client case management, vocational training, or work related
services.
We understand that the WIOIRIK Center has approximately 16 Internet -connected computers in
its lobby resource center. We also understand that the Business and Industrial Services Center
(RISC) across the street has classroom facilities that would be available for staff training. HRMS
can also provide technical expertise in equipping classrooms for Internet instruction if requested.
HRMS can provide the workshops days, evenings, or weekends.
