ARTICLE VIII - OVERTIME <br /> Section 1 . General Policy for Overtime Work. Whenever it shall <br /> be determined to be in the public interest for employees to perform <br /> overtime work, or in an emergency situation, the City Manager, the <br /> Chief of Police, or an authorized representative of the City <br /> Manager or Chief of Police, may require an employee to perform <br /> overtime work. <br /> Section 2 . Definition. <br /> A. Overtime for those employees working the 3/12 - 4/12 <br /> work schedule shall be defined as that authorized or required time <br /> worked in excess of the eighty (80) hours and thirty (30) minutes <br /> required to complete a two week workperiod. <br /> B . For all employees, other than those working the 3/12 <br /> - 4/12 Work Schedule, overtime work is defined as that authorized <br /> or required time worked in excess of the regular workday and/or <br /> workweek except that work amounting to less than thirty (30) <br /> minutes in excess of an employee' s regular workday shall not be <br /> considered overtime . Effective April 15, 1986, said thirty-minute <br /> per-day overtime exclusion shall apply only to employees exempted <br /> from coverage under the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor <br /> Standards Act (FLSA) . <br /> A workweek is a fixed and regularly recurring period of 168 <br /> consecutive hours - 7 consecutive 24-hour periods - as designated <br /> by the appointing authority. <br /> Section 3 . Computation of a Workday, Work Week, Workperiod. <br /> Paid leave for holidays, sickness, vacation, and other time off <br /> with pay shall be credited towards the total time worked in <br /> computing a regular workday, and/or a workperiod, as defined <br /> herein. <br /> Section 4 . Compensation for Overtime . <br /> A. The preferable method by which overtime shall be <br /> compensated is by monetary payment, at one and one-half (1-1/2) <br /> times the employee' s regular rate of pay. <br /> B . Should the Chief of Police determine that the best <br /> interests of the City will be served thereby, he or his designee <br /> may permit an employee to be compensated for overtime work by <br /> taking paid compensatory time off at the rate of one and one-half <br /> (1-1/2) times the employee' s regular rate of pay. <br /> C. Eligible employees may convert time and one-half (T <br /> 1/2) paid overtime to time and one-half (T 1/2) compensatory time <br /> off, with the prior permission of the employee' s supervisor and <br /> subject to the operational needs of the department .
